Chris Carrillo is the principal trumpet of The New Orchestra of Washington in Washington, D.C. and the studio trumpet professor at James Madison University. In addition to his teaching duties at JMU, Carrillo spends his summers teaching at the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival in Germany. He is a former member of the Victoria and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras as well as the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. Carrillo has also performed with the Austin Symphony, the Austin Lyric Opera and he has recorded with the Dallas Wind Symphony on their Grammy nominated recording, Garden of Dreams. Chris has performed as a guest artist with the Presidents Own United States Marine Band Brass Quintet as well as multiple solo and chamber recitals at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and City Recital Hall in Sydney, Australia. He is a Conn-Selmer artist and performs exclusively on Bach Stradivarius trumpets.
Carrillo earned his D.M.A. and M.M. at The University of Texas at Austin where he studied with Ray Sasaki of the Saint Louis Brass Quintet, and Ray Crisara, former principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera and NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini. He studied orchestral performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow and earned a Bachelor of Music Education at The University of Memphis.
