John Fumo attended the New England Conservatory of Music, and moved to Los Angeles in 1978. He worked with Charlie Hadens Liberation Music Orchestra, met multireedist Vinny Golia, and recorded both as a sideman and a leader (1986s After The Fact) for Golias Nine Winds label " an association that continues to this day.

He has been a member of the Jazz Faculty at the California Institute of the Arts since 2000. And currently on the Jazz Faculty at USC.
